iRoom Setup at BIM Show Live 2015

UK’s largest and most-established event for Building Information Modeling (BIM) took place in Manchester again this year. It is the BIM event of the year for about 600 delegates from the architecture, engineering and construction industry. What did you miss if you weren’t there? Highlights below.

At the booth of SMART Technologies, visitors were able to experience BIM models in an immersive way.  We connected three large-format interactive displays to a single workstation and enabled a group of people to effectively collaborate on visual content. Ease-of-use is key for technology adoption, and visitors could simply pick a SMART Board pen to mark-up 2D plans and even BIM models digitally.

CIFE, iRooms and friends on the floor

The three-board setup shown at this event was not just a use case we made up to show off — it was re-created based on a recommendation by CIFE, the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering at Stanford University. Visitors also learned about the economic benefits of such solution, which was analyzed and described in a recent CIFE research project (a summary of their key findings can be found here).

In his presentation on the event’s “Tech Stage”, Chris Southern also talked about the use of an iRoom (also known as Big Room or BIM Cave) for Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE). Prof. Martin Fischer, director of CIFE, provided background about the benefits as well as requirements for such setup in a pre-recorded video interview.

If you were at BIMshow, you would have seen other exhibitors leverage SMART Boards to demo their BIM solutions as well, including Newforma and Clearbox. On SMART’s brand new 55” flat panel display with 4K (Ultra HD) resolution, Tekla showcased its BIMsight software. It comes with a native SMART Board integration, enabling intuitive model navigation and digital mark-ups.

Meet SMART kapp

Another huge draw for us at the show was SMART kapp, the revolutionary dry-erase board. It allows to capture and save notes and sketches in a simple but digital way, via USB key or smartphone. It even enables the user to share the content in real-time with dispersed team members, using the kapp app for Android and iOS.

Congratulations to BIMMY Award winners

THE BIMMY AWARDS are always a highlight of the show, a time to honor companies and individuals that have stood out by ‘raising the bar’ during the two days of BIM Show Live. After receiving last year’s award in the category “Most Innovative Product,” we are proud to share that our UK distributor Steljes now won the award for the best booth. Congratulations! A great achievement to finish another great BIM Show Live event!
